Roof Terrace, West Hampstead

Many roof terraces can be used as places to relax and enjoy city views. There are however practical decisions to consider.  Flat roofs are often built only for maintenance access and cannot take any additional weight.

If there is any doubt the load bearing capacity may need to be determined by a Structural Engineer.

Large planting containers are best placed around the perimeter walls or over load bearing beams to minimise the weight. Lightweight fibreglass , resin or metal galvanised  planters  are ideal.

As roof terraces are often very exposed to the elements, suitable plants should be chosen, ones that can survive  extremes of temperature, strong winds and  harsh direct sunlight.
